Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Analyze common theories relevant to family centered care and pediatric nursing.  
  2. Discuss the importance of including developmental considerations in the communication and care of the family and child.  
  3. Synthesize theoretical and empirical knowledge from the liberal arts and sciences in relation to children with common childhood morbidities.  
  4. Evaluate the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial characteristics of infants, children and adolescents and the implications for nursing care.  
  5. Demonstrate critical thinking and clinical reasoning in the application of social, cultural, developmental, bioethical, and spiritual factors in the assessment, planning of interventions, and evaluation of care provided to children and families.  
  6. Apply developmentally appropriate principles of teaching to meet the learning needs of ill/hospitalized children and their families.  
  7. Integrate evidence, clinical judgment, inter-professional perspectives, and patient preferences in planning, implementing and evaluating comprehensive pediatric nursing care.  
  8. Develop, implement, and evaluate care plans that reflect quality, safety, and teamwork and collaboration in the care of children.  
  9. Social Determinants of Health (SDOH): Students will evaluate and apply evidence-based knowledge about influences of SDOH (cultural, social, environmental, and political) on illness and wellness related to advanced practice and research with diverse populations at the individual, family, community, and societal levels.
