Zoom Activities & Attendance Tracking

Module 3 Zoom Activities

What Can Zoom Do?

In synchronous live sessions, Zoom has features like webcam, screen share, Whiteboard, breakout rooms, polling, chat, and annotation tools to equip you and your learners with methods to share and engage. You can also record your live sessions for flipped activities or review exercises in asynchronous settings.

For help with setting up your Zoom meetings or using the features outlined in the activities below, check out Emory's Zoom support site: https://it.emory.edu/office365/ZOOM.html

Zoom Activity Ideas

You may find that students are more reluctant to participate during Zoom calls than they would be in the classroom. To avoid throwing students off guard by calling on them individually or enduring long silences until a student volunteers, try assigning roles in advance of a live class. Rotate through the roster to give students opportunities to contribute more, while remaining students can adopt more passive methods of contribution.

  • Assign 1-2 students to roleplay with a specific prompt. Have remaining participants provide commentary or respond to the roleplay through Zoom's thumbs up/thumbs down buttons or through specific poll questions you design.
  • Either using the Whiteboard or by screen sharing a document/image, ask students to annotate. They can either complete a problem, highlight errors or specific characteristics, or simply brainstorm.
  • Create breakout rooms in Zoom and assign each group their own prompt. After a short period of time, bring them all into the main meeting room and ask that they share the results of their discussion. Assigning unique prompts to each breakout room can be great for debates or simply covering myriad themes on a subject.

Tracking Attendance

Whether you have a small or large group of students joining you on Zoom, you no longer need to worry about trying to track attendance of participants during your live session. Just follow the four quick steps in the guide below once your meeting has ended.
