13:14:46     From  Avi Wofsy : this... sounds like genocide?
13:15:31     From  Avi Wofsy : necropilotics
13:15:39     From  Tess Gallegos : when talking about vaccine campaigns in prisons we can't forget the history of medical testing on prions populations and how that can feed into vaccine hesitancy? How are your campaign efforts handeling this with a trauma informed lense?
13:16:03     From  Kylie Smith : Achille Mbembe "Necropolitics" (death politics)
13:18:59     From  Avi Wofsy : My grandfather almost died of TB while incarcerated. It is no place for healing, of any kind, by design.
13:19:56     From  Kylie Smith : exactly Avi, not for healing at all
13:23:46     From  Kylie Smith : not that they are right of course

13:30:21     From  Kylie Smith : oh but god forbid we suggest that we could restrict guns??
13:30:49     From  Liezl dela Cruz : agree
13:31:13     From  Avi Wofsy: Approx 30% of people killed by the police have a disability; I don't know that early identification would prevent being killed by the police.
13:31:59     From  Tess Gallegos : when we de institutionalized MH facilities there was no reallocation in outpatient. Just relianze on medicines
13:32:16     From  Tess Gallegos : reliance*
13:32:36     From  Liezl dela Cruz : No MH facilities. We went to jails.
13:32:49     From  Tess Gallegos : and there were bad things happening in the institutional hospitals
13:33:28     From  Kylie Smith : Bernard Harcourt "Transnistutionalisation"
13:33:40     From  Kylie Smith : spelling?!
13:34:57     From  Avi Wofsy : I trained at SF General Hosp which has a separate unit for incarcerated people who need MH services; the services were very much within the framework of incarceration and when/if people were released they were often ineligible for continued services d/t laws about housing, healthcare, etc,.
13:37:28     From  Kylie Smith : exactly Avi its still insitutionalisation
13:38:57     From  Hannah Ranson : Can you share that peice?
13:39:09     From  Adaora Ede : please do! ^
13:39:11     From  Roseline Jean Louis : Most of us don't even know about Tuskegee
13:39:18     From  Kylie Smith : i have the link will send around

13:44:14     From  Kylie Smith : the article from yesterday
13:46:17     From  Kylie Smith : go ahead and raise your hand if you have more questions for Dr. Reverby
13:47:03     From  Katie Vaughn : Thank you so much for sharing your stories and your perspective Adaora!
13:50:10     From  Kylie Smith : https://www.cdc.gov/healthequity/racism-disparities/index.html Links to an external site.
13:52:10     From  Katie Vaughn : Back to what you said - white supremacy is a hell of a drug
13:55:54     From  Kylie Smith : https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/comrades-in-health/9780813561202 (BOOK ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH ACTIVISTS) Links to an external site.
13:56:26     From  Cole Kawanami (he/him) : it would be cool to see the syllabus
13:56:54     From  Tess Gallegos : we're not done reading and learning after this course so more things to read would be goos
13:57:28     From  Kylie Smith : soooo many things to read
14:03:00     From  Tess Gallegos : while the many people at the CDC have believed in this (that racism is a public health crisis) unfortunately the CDC has been musled in terms of what they can or can't say. I remember when I was in grad school one of my teachers was upset because his funding was being help up until her changed the terminology in his research proposal- he wasn't allowed to say " men who have sex with men". That was 2012
14:04:46     From  Kylie Smith : good point Tess which shows how political science is
14:07:15     From  Kylie Smith : this is what Octavia has been watching and i admit i can not handle it at the moment but will watch over summer https://www.hbo.com/exterminate-all-the-brutes Links to an external site.
14:07:31     From  Liezl dela Cruz : Yes I'm watching that show
14:11:43     From  Kylie Smith : https://www.ruhabenjamin.com/race-after-technology
14:12:31     From  Katie Vaughn : Really spectacular speakers this semester
14:12:36     From  Liezl dela Cruz : seriously
14:24:15     From  Cole Kawanami (he/him) : have been really grateful for how flexible and accommodating you’ve been all semester Dr. Smith it’s really helped
14:24:26     From  Liezl dela Cruz : truth
14:27:07     From  Hannah Ranson : In theory It would be nice to do both, but I’m also strapped on time at this point in the semester

14:34:29     From  Kylie Smith : Cole I'm glad its been helpful! thanks for that feedback
14:37:51     From  Hannah Ranson : Feel that in public health too Katie!
14:42:45     From  Tess Gallegos : its been nice having the history students here since its been a while since I've had that exposure
14:43:43     From  Liezl dela Cruz : Me too. I like having the different perspectives
14:44:36     From  Hannah Ranson : Wooooow not surprising Emory
14:44:52     From  Cole Kawanami (he/him) : is there anyone we could complain too
14:45:09     From  Liezl dela Cruz : It's so great to have everyone here
14:46:06     From  Sabine Schroepfer : I don’t know how credit hours work in the nursing school, but this course can’t count for undergrad majors (I believe) because it’s 2 credits which might be another barrier
14:46:15     From  Hannah Ranson : I definitely just stumbled upon it when looking for classes this semester. They need a better way to advertise these classes
14:47:01     From  Cole Kawanami (he/him) : one of the reasons i joined the class is because it fulfills my history concentration for law economics and human rights where there’s usually like no electives that fulfill it
14:47:11     From  Cole Kawanami (he/him) : but yeah the only way i found the class was on the history listserv the week of registration
14:48:28     From  Kylie Smith : i think you're right sabine, i would maybe take it up to 3 credits next time

14:52:39     From  Avi Wofsy : I wish I could have taken this class at another time, when I could really engage, because it's very relevant (but I guess will always be relevant).
14:52:47     From  Roseline Jean Louis : Same Avi

14:53:03     From  Liezl dela Cruz : I wish this was a year long class!
14:53:47     From  Katie Vaughn : I like following your adventures (and those of your dog) on Instagram
14:53:52     From  Adaora Ede : it is extremely relevant! as someone in the BSN program i find it super unfortunate that this is my only exposure to this sort of material because some of my peers as future clinicians (as well as myself) would really benefit from this understanding of the system they’re going into

14:54:02     From  Cole Kawanami (he/him) : you do have a good twitter
14:54:08     From  Liezl dela Cruz : haha
14:54:10     From  Kylie Smith : @drkyliesmith
14:56:39     From  Sabine Schroepfer : I appreciate that you let go of some of the organization though in order to truly listen to student feedback and adjust
14:56:54     From  Julia Schrogin : You and this class are the main reason my dad believes Emory is providing an impressive education :)
14:57:34     From  Avi Wofsy : So true Adaora, this class is really unique and that is such a condemnation of the department as a whole.
14:57:48     From  Octavia : ^^^

14:57:50     From  Liezl dela Cruz : I love this class and speakers
14:58:37     From  Adaora Ede : thank you so much!
