Week 1 Activity

This week we will go over the course requirements and get to know each other a little, and I will tell you what I am hoping we might achieve.

We will then discuss the idea of "race as a biological" category and why this is a problem.

The chapter by Karen and Barbara Fields is an indepth dive into the many historical and theoretical issues that contribute to their idea of racecraft, which picks up some of the threads from Dr. Roberts' TedTalk.

NB: If we cant get the Fields chapter in time I have added alternative readings to the AT A GLANCE document.

Questions to consider when you are reading which we will discuss:

  1. What do the authors mean by 'racecraft'?
  2. What did you understand or not understand in their chapter?
  3. What does it mean to call race a social category as opposed to a biological one?
  4. What does Dorothy Roberts mean by the problem of race based medicine?
  5. How are we to understand the role of medicine in creating race as a category?

Rather than discussion forum we will co-create a google doc for our thoughts this week. Link is available on previous page or here:
