Using the Accessibility Checker and UDOIT Tools

Accessibility Compliance Made Easy

Use the built-in Canvas Accessibility Checker and UDOIT (Universal Design Online content Inspection Tool) in your course to ensure accessibility compliance in your courses.

 Two Tools for Accessibility Compliance

There are two tools available in Canvas that can help detect accessibility issues in your Canvas course: the built-in Accessibility Checker, and the external tool, UDOIT. Both are installed and available in all Canvas courses. They have slightly different features, so the Canvas support team at Emory recommends using both tools for the best results. Whether you're creating a new course or updating an existing one for accessibility, these tools can save hours of time reviewing your Canvas content manually.

You should run these tools after you have designed your course content using the best practices outlined in the Canvas Accessibility Checklist. Do not use them in place of best practices, as the tools are meant to provide additional quality assurance.

 Instructions for Using Accessibility Checker

As Canvas' built-in accessibility tool, the Accessibility Checker can be used on any Canvas content on Pages, Assignments, and Discussions that was created using the Rich Content Editor. Instructions for running the Accessibility Checker in the New Rich Content Editor can be found on the Canvas community page Links to an external site..

 Instructions for Using UDOIT

Developed by the University of Central Florida, UDOIT is an external tool installed in Emory Canvas courses that allows instructors to view and fix accessibility issues throughout an entire course in a streamlined way. It differs from the Accessibility Checker in that it checks the entire course, not just content made with the Rich Content Editor. Instructions for running the UDOIT tool can be found in the UDOIT User Guide Links to an external site..
