Cloud recording vs. local recording

Most Emory University users can record Zoom meetings either locally (saving an audio file, a video file, and the chat as a text file to your computer) or to the cloud (uploaded to the Zoom cloud). Emory University users will need to be logged into Zoom with your Emory account to use this option.

Note that cloud recording is only available to paid subscribers and not available to Emory Users under our HIPAA account (covering SOM, SON, SPH, WCI, a few Emory College clinicians, and FSAP).

Cloud Recording

To record a meeting to the cloud:

  1. Start a meeting as the host.
  2. Click the Record button and select Record to the Cloud to begin recording. (This will only be available to the host unless the host has enabled the ability for participants to record a meeting.) You will see a recording indicator in the top-left corner of the Zoom window.
  3. To stop recording, click Stop Recording or End Meeting. (Note that you can temporarily Pause Recording if you are sharing content that you do not want to be recorded.)
  4. The recording must be processed before viewing; this will happen automatically after the meeting is ended. The host will receive an email notification when processing is completed.

Sharing cloud recordings

Zoom will send an email to the host's email address when the process is completed. The host will receive two links: one to manage the recording and another to share with participants. You can email participants the link to the recording and/or post the link on Canvas.

Additionally, the host can download the recording files and share them as they would any other file (via email, OneDrive, etc.). If you plan on using Zoom videos in a Canvas course, upload them to Canvas Studio Links to an external site. and add your videos to a page Links to an external site. in Canvas to avoid the file storage limits of your Canvas course.

Local Recording (to your computer)

  1. Click Record. (This will only be available to the host unless the host has enabled the ability for participants to record a meeting.)
  2. Select Record on this Computer. You will see a recording indicator in the top-left corner of the Zoom window.
  3. To stop recording, click Stop Recording or End Meeting. (Note that you can temporarily Pause Recording if you are sharing content that you do not want to be recorded.)
  4. The recording must be processed before viewing. After the meeting is ended, a Zoom menu will automatically open and begin converting the recording so you can access the files. Once the conversion process is complete, the folder containing the recording files will open. (Files will be saved to the default location set in Zoom; likely, this is in a folder titled Zoom in your Documents or My Documents folder). This process may vary depending on your computer but will take approximately half the duration of the recording.

Note: By default, the audio+video file (MP4) will be named Zoom_0.mp4. The audio only file (M4A) is named audio_only.m4a.

If you pin the videos Links to an external site. of specific participants of your meeting, only those participants' videos will be included in the local recording. This may be helpful for students revisiting recordings later, as a video recording of only the speaker/instructor may be less distracting. You can also record using the Side-by-Side: Speaker view if someone is screensharing.

Sharing local recordings

You can share your recording files as you would any other file (via email, OneDrive, etc.). If you plan on using Zoom videos in a Canvas course, upload them to Canvas Studio Links to an external site. and add your videos to a page Links to an external site. in Canvas to avoid the file storage limits of your Canvas course.
