Taking Attendance in Zoom

Emory Teaching & Learning Technologies has put together a guide for taking attendance in Zoom. We have briefly summarized how to take attendance using Zoom Usage Reports below, but please review the guide for more information and for other options: TLT Guide for Taking Attendance in Zoom.

It is important that you ensure that all students log in to Zoom with their Emory credentials on all devices they use with Zoom.

Zoom Meeting Reports

First, download the Usage Report for your meeting.

  1. Login to the Emory Zoom web portal at emory.zoom.us Links to an external site..
  2. Click Reports at the bottom of the menu, and select Usage. (Note that these reports are not created immediately and may take 30+ minutes to generate after a meeting.)
  3. To open a usage report, find a specific meeting and click the number in the Participants column at the far right of the screen. (You can choose the date range when your meeting occurred and click Search to find a specific meeting.)
  4. A dialogue box will open with participant data. To download an Excel file of the data, click Export. To simplify taking attendance, we recommend checking both boxes: Export with meeting data and Show unique users. This will create an Excel file with the information for the meeting with only 1 value for each student. (If you do not check Show unique users, students that joined the meeting multiple times because they lost their internet connection and had to rejoin, were logged in from 2 devices, etc. will have multiple values in the meeting report.)
  5. See the Zoom Support page for getting started with reports Links to an external site. for more information.

Next, download your roster from Canvas.

  1. Go to your Canvas course and click Grades.
  2. Click Actions and select Export.

Finally, compare the Zoom Usage Report to your class roster. You can do this in a number of ways. We recommend using the students' login IDs (e.g. Kevin Nguyen = knguyen5), as students' display names in Zoom may not match their name in your roster and cannot be sorted by last name.

Conveniently, when students are logged in to Zoom with their Emory credentials, the Usage Report will show their Emory email. You can compare this to the list of student login IDs in your roster. The TLT Guide for Taking Attendance in Zoom illustrates how to do this using conditional formatting.
