Surveys and Polls

Surveys and Polls

Surveys and polls can be used:

  • To build community and understand how students are feeling about the class and in general
  • At the start of class as a primer to what’s to come
  • After each mini lesson (15-20 minutes)
  • At the end of class as an “exit ticket”
  • As a review game/trivia before an exam

Zoom Polling

Overview

Zoom Polling Links to an external site.is a feature that allows you to ask participants multiple-choice questions and see the distribution of responses. These can be anonymous or identifiable, and the questions can be single-choice (A or B or C) or multiple-choice (can select A, B, and/or C).

Set-up

To use Zoom polling, you must first use the Emory Zoom web portal Links to an external site. to enable polls. You must also use the web portal to create your polls (you cannot create polls in the desktop Zoom program).

To create a poll:

  1. Login to the Zoom web portal, go to the Meetings page, and click on your scheduled meeting. (Alternatively, you can click Polling during the meeting. This will open up the web portal in your default web browser where you can add additional polls or questions.)
  2. Scroll down to the Poll option and click Add.
  3. Input the title of the poll (e.g. Class on Monday) and questions/answers for that poll. (To add a new question, click Add a Question at the bottom.)
  4. Change settings as needed (anonymous or not; single choice or multiple choice).
  5. Click Save at the bottom. Your poll will now be available in your Zoom meeting.

When you create a poll, it is linked to a specific meeting, so you will only be able to access the poll for that specific meeting. Only the host that created a meeting can add poll questions for that meeting. Note that you can only create a max of 25 polls for a single meeting.Screenshot of menu for creating a poll in Zoom

  5. You will see the results as shown below on the left. If you would like to share the results to the participants in the meeting, click Share Results. Participants will then see the results of the polling questions as shown on the right. (Sharing does NOT show who got the question correct, but this information can be generated in a report later; see Zoom Support link below.)

  6. After you close the poll, you will have the option to Share or Relaunch. If you relaunch a poll, data from the first poll will NOT be saved.
