Zoom User Guide for Students

Zoom for Remote Learning
Zoom is Emory's campus-wide video conferencing tool.

  • Your instructor may hold a live class meeting via Zoom
  • You can use it to present work to your class, and/or attend office hours with your instructor
  • Students can meet with each other for project collaboration and study groups


What you need to get started?

  • An internet connection
  • PC, laptop, or mobile device
  • Your meeting ID number or URL of the meeting (your instructor will provide this info)
  • A headset or ear buds (if you’re participating with a laptop)


Download and Launch the Zoom App

Watch the video tutorial here Links to an external site.:

  • Click the link or URL to the Zoom meeting posted by your professor
  • You will be prompted to download the Zoom application
  • Download and install the Zoom application

Download and Launch the Zoom Mobile App

The Zoom mobile app is available for both iOS and Android Mobile devices:

  • Search “Zoom Cloud Meetings” in the App Store or Google Play Store and install Zoom
  • Select “Join a Meeting” and enter the “Meeting ID”


The Zoom Menu Bar

The Zoom menu bar appears at the bottom of the Zoom window once the meeting begins. If you don’t see the menu bar, move your mouse slightly and the bar will appear.  (The bar disappears after a few seconds when in full-screen mode)

You can do the following with the Zoom Menu Bar

  1. Mute/Unmute your audio. You can select your audio input here by clicking the up arrow next to the microphone icon
  2. Start/Stop your video. You can also select your video input here by clicking the up arrow next to the camera icon
  3. Invite more people to join by email, IM, or meeting ID
  4. View the list of participants
  5. Share your desktop (everything on your desktop) or (select a specific application)
  6. Send a message to one person (using private chat) or to all participants
  7. Record the meeting (if you have been granted permission)
  8. Leave or end the video meeting
