Data Collection and Analysis/How to critique

Syllabus Modules Instructor

Objectives:

Discuss factors important to the data collection process: cost, time, need for consistency, and availability of assistance.
Discuss data collection tasks.
Describe the common problems occurring during data collection (people, researcher, institutional, and event problems).
Describe the following steps of the critique process for quantitative research: comprehension, comparison, analysis, evaluation, and conceptual clustering.
Describe the standards proposed to evaluate qualitative studies: (a) descriptive vividness, (b) methodological congruence, (c) analytical preciseness, (d) theoretical connectedness, and (e) heuristic relevance.

Kathryn Wood RN, PhD

Dr. Wood has devoted her nursing career to improving the quality of life for individuals with atrial arrhythmias through scholarship, leadership, and promoting clinical practice changes. Her research has generated enhanced understanding of symptoms, diagnosis, and measurement of outcomes surrounding supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) in women-- a population frequently misdiagnosed and not offered timely curative treatments. In the national setting, her leadership as vice chair of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Council on Cardiovascular Nursing’s program committee led to representation of nursing on important AHA practice guidelines and scientific statements. Wood was also invited by the European Society of Cardiology to participate in the development of guidelines for arrhythmia patient education and specific education for managing new anticoagulant medications for providers and patients. She has also worked in “industry” and will discuss the role of nurses in research in that setting.

Blake McGee, MPH, RN

Mr. McGee's research interests include the effect of health policy choices on health care expenditures, service usage patterns and patient outcomes. Also, he is also interested in examining the effects of patient cost-sharing for essential heart failure medications on prescription refill frequency and acute care use for heart failure complications.
